Cycling at Bang Krachao — Green lung of Bangkok.

Bang Krachao — Green Lung

Bang Krachao is an island, formed out of a bend in the Chao Phraya River. This island is separated by the mainland Bangkok by a river, and can be easily reached using a boat/ferry from multiple piers in Bangkok.

Bang Krachao is also known as “Green Lung”, because it literally looks like one when you see it on Google Maps. This area stands out from the rest of the concrete jungle of Bangkok.

How to reach Bang Krachao?

The Onnut is the closest BTS to it, from Onnut you can take a taxi to the Sanphawut pier (60 bhat), and board the free ferry to Bang Krachao. On reaching Bang Krachao you will immediately see many cycle shops for rent. Cycles are available from 50 bhat for the whole day.

Where to go?

Usually when you rent a bike, you are given a map of places to see in the vicinity. Just about a kilometer away is the Sri Nakhon Khuan Khan Park, which is the biggest attraction. I would also recommend to go to the Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market, it is not a real floating market, but expect a lot of everything to see here. A lot of fresh fruits and veggies are sold here too.

My final thoughts

Bang Kachao is an ideal place to escape the rush and pollution of Bangkok. Try reaching before it gets too hot, 6:30 AM is the time we went and it was pretty cool. Expect the day to get hotter after 9–10 AM, and do carry sunglasses, a cap and some sunscreen.

And don’t forget to enjoy!
